The Ingenico EFT930: a mobile and contactless payment terminal

Dalgety Bay, August 5, 2011. Ingenico (Euronext : FR0000125346 - ING), leading worldwide provider of payment solutions, has for the very first time, piloted its contactless payment terminals at one of the UK’s biggest music events, the Isle of Wight Festival, attended by approximately 65,000 people.

The project, led by MasterCard, saw its MasterCard® PayPass™ prepaid wristbands deployed in the VIP area. Upon entry to the VIP enclosure, 150 festival-goers were offered the first ever Mastercard PayPass prepaid contactless wristbands. Pre-loaded with £30, the contactless wristbands were used to purchase food and drink at Central Catering’s bar and Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feast restaurant with a simple tap of the wrist against one of Ingenico’s contactless EFT930 payment terminals.

The EFT930 was the first contactless mobile payment terminal to receive MasterCard PayPass certification, meeting all of the required performance and security standards, with the ability to handle smart cards, magnetic stripe cards, contactless cards and now contactless wristbands.

Research conducted by MasterCard amongst those using the ID&C produced wristbands found that they were their preferred payment method at the events, with an astounding 100% of users stating that they’d use the wristbands again at other festivals and sporting events.

In the UK, Isle of Wight is not the only festival to trial contactless this year. The Wireless Festival piloted contactless terminals to pay for food and drink whilst WOMAD piloted contactless technology to assist with crew and staff accreditation. More than a million people attend festivals in the UK each summer.

Ingenico has been at the heart of the contactless revolution since 2004. In 2010, the company doubled its sales of contactless and NFC enabled payment terminals to merchants across the world.

Craig Doyle, Managing Director, Ingenico Northern Europe, said:
quoteWe know from our own research that consumers are looking for better education on contactless, and that is exactly what this project delivers. The wristbands offer festival goers the opportunity to see for themselves just how quick, efficient and safe the payment process is. We are delighted to be working with MasterCard and other partners in delivering this innovative project and hope that it is just the start of something much bigger for both the live event industry and the wider take-up of contactless.”
Hany Fam, President of MasterCard UK & Ireland, said:
quoteWe’re delighted with the success of the project, which was really the first part of testing consumer acceptance of a truly ‘cashless’ environment, which has been much talked about in the festival world.”
